AmeriCorps is a national program with many divisions. One is Minnesota Reading Corps. The Minnesota Reading Corps model integrates assessment and intervention in working with students to improve literacy skills. It utilizes the Response to Intervention (RtI) framework.
Members serve in elementary schools as one-on-one tutors to provide supplemental reading practice to students who are just below proficiency in reading. These students are classified as Tier 2 students who need a more intense, individualized instruction to help them reach the grade level target goals.
The members tutor students for 15-20 minutes each day using specific interventions that build fluency skills. Members collect data each week to make collaborative instructional decisions for students with the internal coach and reading teachers.
